چکیده
The focus for the Centre is research into individual and strategic decision-making using a combination of theoretical and experimental methods. On the theory side, members of the Centre investigate individual choice under uncertainty, cooperative and non-cooperative game theory, as well as theories of psychology, bounded rationality and evolutionary game theory. Members of the Centre have applied experimental methods in the fields of Public Economics, Individual Choice under Risk and Uncertainty, Strategic Interaction, and the performance of auctions, markets and other economic institutions. Much of the Centre's research involves collaborative projects with researchers from other departments in the UK and overseas. Collusive equilibria in share auctions despite being the focus of previous theoretical research, have received little empirical or experimental support. We develop a theoretical model of uniform price initial public offering (IPO) auctions and show that there exists a continuum of pure strategy equilibria where investors with a higher expected valuation bid more aggressively and as a result the market price increases with the market value. The collusive equilibria lie in fact on the boundary of this set, which is obtained under stricter conditions when demand is discrete than in the continuous format. Our results have important implications for the design of IPO auctions.

متن کاملMonotone Equilibrium in Multi-Unit Auctions
In two-sided multi-unit auctions having a variety of payment rules, including uniform-price and discriminatory auctions, a monotone pure strategy equilibrium (MPSE) exists when bidders are risk-neutral with independent multi-dimensional types and interdependent values. In fact, all mixed strategy equilibria are ex post allocationand interim expected payment-equivalent to MPSE. Thus, for standar...
متن کاملGrid Distributions to study single object auctions ∗ ( Preliminary Version . )
This paper proposes a new approach for dealing with general dependence in auctions. The method allows both theoretical and numerical characterization of monotone pure strategy equilibria in first price auctions. Given the close connection between the theoretical and numerical parts, one can draw conjectures from the observation of computer experiments (simulations), which can suggest directions...
متن کاملRationalizability and Monotonicity in Large Uniform Price and Double Auctions
We analyze a broad class of auctions in which goods are traded at a single price, such as the uniform price auctions and the double auction (Satterthwaite and Williams (1989)), while admitting the presence of both common and private value and allowing players to trade more than one unit of the object. Instead of calculating a Nash equilibrium, we first eliminate the weakly dominated strategies,...
متن کاملDiscrete Bids and Empirical Inference in Divisible Good Auctions
I examine a model of a uniform price auction of a perfectly divisible good with private information in which the bidders submit discrete bidpoints, and hence step functions, rather than continuous downward sloping demand functions. I characterize necessary conditions for equilibrium bidding. The characterization result reveals a close relationship between bidding in multiunit auctions and oligo...
